"Do I need to hire an attorney?" Of the top five questions I am most frequently asked, that is probably number one. And my typical pat response: "Would a plumber tell you to fix your own sink or hire him/her?" Interestingly, I found a plumber who on more than one occasion told me to fix it myself. In certain situations, similar advise may be valid when considering whether to hire an attorney. Clearly, some circumstances may arise which call for you to immediately consult and retain an attorney. But certain questions must be asked and answered as honestly as possible. Whether to hire an attorney is a very personal choice. You should consider the nature of the issue or problem, the possible various outcomes and the impact and consequences of each of those possible outcomes. Then, ask yourself, "do I feel comfortable; do I feel I have the skill and knowledge to handle the problem; and, whether the potential outcomes and consequences would have significant impact, negative or positive, upon my life, my family, my business, my job, my future." If there is any doubt or any concern, it is time to seek counsel from a skilled attorney. A good initial consultation with an attorney will cover most of the same questions. Be prepared to review and discuss these things. I believe that the goal in this initial consultation is to help the individual better understand and appreciate the nature of their issue, the options for seeking some resolution and possible outcomes. You also want to discuss the potential costs involved in retaining legal counsel. The goal is to help you be better informed and better equipped to answer the question, "Do I need to hire an attorney?" Whether based upon the nature, seriousness or complexity of the problem, or simply a matter of comfort and convenience, considering these questions and others or asking these questions to an attorney during a scheduled consultation will help answer that question.
